In Memoriam: Br. David L. Henderson, SJ
Let us pray in thanksgiving for the life of our brother, Br. David L. Henderson, SJ, who died at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, March 6, 2015, at Colombiere Center in Clarkston, Mich. He was 71 years old. May he rest in peace.
Dave was born on October 27, 1943, in Chicago, Ill. He entered the Society of Jesus on September 1, 1971, at Colombiere College in Clarkston, Mich. He took final vows on May 13, 2000 at St. Procopius Church in Chicago, Ill.
Dave graduated from Loyola Academy in Wilmette in 1961. Before entering he studied at the University of Notre Dame from 1961-1963 and he was in the Marine Corps Reserve from 1965-1971. After entering the Society, Dave obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Philosophy (with a minor in Religious Education) from the University of Detroit (1975). From 1977-1981 he studied Theology at Jesuit School of Theology in Chicago. In 1986 Dave changed grades from scholastic to brother.
Dave spent most of his time as a Jesuit teaching and counseling students and managing facilities. During his regency, Dave taught religious education at St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati (1975-1977). He spent 13 years as a student counselor at Loyola Academy in Wilmette (1982-1985 and 1986-1996). Dave was instrumental in rehabbing the original Cristo Rey Jesuit High School building in Chicago in time for opening day in August 1996. He then served as the facilities manager at Cristo Rey Jesuit High School in Chicago for 13 years (1996-2009).
In addition to working with students and managing facilities, Dave spent a year as an assistant to the rector and minister at St. Ignatius College Prep in Chicago (1981-1982) and a year assisting Br. Joe Rastetter in rehabbing buildings among the poor in Cincinnati (1985-1986). He was an auxiliary consultor for the Chicago Province (1979-1980 and 1991-1995). He also was instrumental in the annual rental of the Chicago-area villa in Michigan City, Indiana. Dave moved to Colombiere Center in 2009 to deal with health issues.
