Let us pray in thanksgiving for the life of Fr. Edward M. Nemeth, SJ, who died on August 22, 2015 at Colombiere Center in Clarkston, Mich. He was 83 years old, a Jesuit for 66 years, and a priest for 50 years.

Ed was born on October 24, 1931 in Cleveland, Ohio, where he graduated from Gesu Catholic School and Saint Ignatius High School (1949). He entered the Chicago Province of the Society of Jesus on August 18, 1949 at Milford, Ohio. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 17, 1965 at Colombiere College in Clarkston, Mich., and professed final vows on February 2, 1974 in Detroit, Mich. 

As a Jesuit, Ed earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy and Latin (1956) from Spring Hill College in Mobile, Ala. He earned a master's degree (1960) and doctorate (1962) in chemistry from Loyola University Chicago. Ed also completed post-doctoral studies at the University of Florida in Gainesville (1967-1968).

After finishing his post-doctoral studies, Ed was a professor of chemistry at the University of Detroit Mercy (1968-1975). He then spent the rest of his Jesuit life in pastoral ministries. He led individuals in the Spiritual Exercises while he was a retreat and spiritual director at Colombiere Center (1976-1980), worked as the Detroit Province coordinator for Horizons for Justice (1980-1981), and served as the director of the University of Detroit Mercy's Romero Center, where he also performed retreat ministry (1981-1987). 

Ed also spent many years in parish ministry. He was associate pastor of Gesu Catholic Church in Detroit (1987-1993), did pastoral ministry in the Diocese of Saginaw, Mich. (1993-1996), and was associate pastor of Church of the Gesu in University Heights, Ohio (1996-2002). In January 2003, Ed moved to Colombiere Center to care for his health.
