Describe your current role — what do you do each day?
I am studying theology at the Jesuit School of Theology (JST). I am in the Master of Theological Studies (MTS) degree program concentrating on spirituality, especially Ignatian Spirituality and the Spiritual Exercises. I hope to get a deeper understanding of the theology behind the Spiritual Exercises and to become a better spiritual director.
What do you love most about being a brother?
Strangely enough, it is being a brother in the Society of Jesus. It hard to describe it any other way. It's many things at once that make up the whole of the Jesuit brother. The fraternal love that we have for our brother Jesuits, the call to humble service that we devote to our works, the companionship that we share in mission and ministry with others. This is what matters most to a Jesuit brother. One could say that this is our identity and is what I cherish most about being a brother.
Why did you feel called to serve as a brother/as a Jesuit?
I think I felt called to serve much like anyone is called to serve. It started with something simple like being asked to read at Mass, or help at a local soup kitchen. Someone had a need and they asked. I felt so generous in doing what was asked of me that I asked: What more can I do? At some point I mustered the courage to ask myself, can I be so generous as to become a Jesuit? Then after that I asked myself, do I have the humility to answer that call and become a Jesuit brother? As to the why of the question, there is need in the world and I have gifts and talents to share. Generosity is the key to my call.
