Describe your current role — what do you do each day?
I’m president of a non-profit house building company, Gesu Housing, in Omaha. I’m not doing hammering and nailing anymore, but when we started I was. We have been building about five houses a year, and the houses are for low-income people. I also coach basketball at a small high in North Omaha, Roncalli Catholic High School.
Why did you feel called to serve as a brother/as a Jesuit?
I went to Marquette University High School in Milwaukee, and at some point in time I started thinking of joining the “Jebs.” At one point during my senior year I made a retreat and talked to my retreat master, and I said, “I think I have a vocation.” And he said, “Congratulations.” I didn’t know what he was going to say, but I didn’t think he was going to say congratulations. There were brothers at Marquette High and from the get-go I wanted to be a brother.
What do you love most about being a Jesuit brother?
It’s a way for me to be with Christ in trying to save souls and save people. There’s a lot of ways to do it, but this is one way. I love being a Jesuit brother. The Jesuits are a great bunch of guys that I live and work with, and I really enjoy it.
