Stanley Charles, SJ, 36, was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, but raised in the village of Pilate. He attended a secondary school run by the Congregation of Holy Cross, and immediately after graduating in 1999, Charles joined the Congregation of Holy Cross for six years. He attended the Centre Inter-Instituts de Formation Religieuse, where he received a bachelor’s degree in theology in 2007 and was the president of the Fraternité Intercommunautaire, a fraternity within his religious community. By the time he completed his bachelor’s, he had discerned that he was being called to the Jesuits, entering in 2007. He felt the Society was different in the way that Jesuits dealt with others, and he admired their simplicity and humility. As a novice, he lived, worked and accompanied the people of the village of Bombardopolis in northern Haiti. From 2009 to 2011, Charles studied philosophy at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá, Colombia, receiving a Licentiate in Philosophy. For regency from 2011 to 2013, he worked with refugees and migrants at the Haiti-Dominican Republic border for Solidarite-Fwontalye (Solidarity at the Border), part of Service Jésuite aux Migrants (Jesuit Migrant Service). In 2013, Charles was missioned to the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, earning a Licentiate in Sacred Theology. This was a time that was most meaningful to him because he experienced the Jesuits as a truly international Society. He was ordained to the diaconate in April 2015 at the Church of the Gesù in Rome, and he served as a deacon with the African-Congolese community at the Church of the Gesù and also for one month in 2015 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Oakland, California. He was ordained a priest on November 21, 2015, by Bishop Joseph Gontrand Décoste, SJ, Bishop of Jérémie, Haiti, in the Chapelle des Frères de l’Instruction Chrétienne in Port-au-Prince. He speaks Haitian Creole, French, Spanish, English and Italian. As a priest, Charles serves as a collaborator at the Peter Faber Center of Spirituality in Port-au-Prince and as a member of the team that accompanies candidates for the Society of Jesus.
