Describe your current role — what do you do each day?
I am currently on sabbatical. As part of my sabbatical, I am taking computer classes and theology classes. I also have more free time to interact with family members, colleagues, friends and high school classmates. While on sabbatical I continue to serve as minister of the Jesuit community at White House Retreat. I do some of the building maintenance, purchase community supplies and keep the books for the Jesuit community.
I also serve as a chaplain for the St. Louis City Police Department. As chaplain I offer spiritual and personal guidance to police officers and their families. In order to build up rapport with the officers, I ride an eight-hour shift with the officers in their police car. I do ride-alongs about three times a month.
What is the most interesting thing about your vocation?
I get to serve Christ, the Church and the Society in a variety of ways. I was a high school teacher and coach for 22 years. I worked in a parish for one year. I served as minister of the community at a house for retired and semi-retired Jesuits for five years. I worked at a retreat house for 13 years. I have been a police chaplain for 26 years. I was ordained a permanent deacon in 1984, and thus, I can officiate at baptisms, weddings and funerals.
What do you love most about being a brother?
I love being a brother because I know that I have had an
impact on many people. Through the years I have been able to bring joy and
happiness to many people, and I have also helped several people deal with some
serious personal issues. Hopefully, this interaction has brought them closer to
God and made their faith in Jesus Christ grow stronger.
