Vision: the experience of being touched by the light of faith, nature, reason, spirit. I think I have always been a visual person, though it was not until my early years in the Society of Jesus, when I had the opportunity for prayer, reflection, and peaceful appreciation of God’s gifts, that I became aware of how much I was touched by the power of images seen and imagined, remembered and gratefully recalled.

I feel extremely fortunate to have been blessed by powerful and happy pictures from childhood, early education, family and friends, sacraments and liturgy, time spent in the outdoors, and the rich days of early formation with good friends in the fields and lakes surrounding Jesuit College in Minnesota. These experiences became part of my daily prayer and accompanied my experiences of God’s love in a way that has remained with me all my Jesuit life. The gift of contemplation and the revelation of a powerful presence of God’s creative love in my life, as well as in the lives of so many people that I have been privileged to know and serve and accompany, have remained mysterious visual sources of direction and nourishment throughout my days as a Jesuit.
I also feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to follow my interests in literature, art, and photography while teaching for many years with students of all ages, most particularly for many years with students at Creighton Universityand with fellow visual artists around the country. I have been able to share my own enthusiasm for creative vision while helping students come to a greater awareness and appreciation of the beauty of the world in which they have been created and toward finding the mystery of God’s love in their lives.
