While studying chemical engineering in 1957, my university opened a new option in biochemical engineering, and, along with four other students, I began a new program of studies. At that time, there were only four such programs in American universities. Surely, finding employment would never be a problem.
Some years later, I joined a team of 2,000 scientists and engineers at a Department of Defense facility in Maryland. From day one, however, I felt uneasy about the work I was doing, but it was so challenging that it took me almost four years to “see the light.” Behind all the research, people in the Pentagon had a weapon of war in mind. Killing people (children!) with biological weapons! What a horror story!
My internal struggle led me to look at the Society of Jesus. It was like a dark cloud had lifted and the joy returned to my life.
Throughout the years, I have been a counselor, a teacher, a retreat director, a pastor, a spiritual director, and a local superior. These ministries led to my involvement in the work for justice and interreligious dialog, which included eight years on the board of the local Council of Churches.
It’s all been a joy!
