Resourceful

On March 7, I got home to Colombiere after celebrating Mass for brain-injured persons and their care-giving staff at Mary’s Children Family Center, a daycare for the brain injured. I got my tray of lunch (fish and fries) and sat down across from Fr. Ben Morin.
The Jesuit dining room was full and noisy with Jesuits and guests. Two other Jesuits at my table had just finished eating and took their leave.
Fr. Ben looked up at me and asked, “Are you a Jesuit?” I answered, “Yes, I have been a Jesuit for fifty years.” He mused for a moment and muttered, “Fifty years.” Then he got pensive. When he looked up again, he said, “I entered in 1946.” I thought for a moment and said, “You have been a Jesuit for 68 years. And you are 93 years old.” He chuckled and declared, “You are a genius.” I smiled, shook my head, and thought to myself, “I am not a genius. I just happen to be resourceful.”
That word, resourceful, is what attracted me to the Jesuits more than fifty years ago. I never thought I would become as resourceful as I am today – thanks be to God for the Ignatian Spirituality I picked up living and working with my fellow Jesuits.
