In this song refrain, I suggest how care has worked in my life – how I have been cared for and how I have tried to care for others these fifty years, many of those years in Hispanic and African-American parishes, remembering, reconciling, and gathering people in worship, service, and discernment. Just make the first person pronoun plural in the refrain above and you have my prayer for all of us.
What a privilege to serve the Lord in the Society of Jesus! “What return can I make to the Lord for all God has done for me? I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the LORD” (Psalm 116). And I will try to live out the truth of this verse from another song:
I will walk humbly with my God
Whose friends surround me like a holy guard,
And act with justice and speak with kindness
Growing by the river, ever new and ever old.
