Care matters a great deal to me. The sensitivity and attentiveness of caring persons convey aspects of God’s own love. That’s the spiritual idea; actually receiving this care is quite practical, for example, sitting at a counter in a diner across from a thoughtful server, or receiving a phone call from a friend, or speaking after Mass with a person about why a comment in the homily touched her. The interactions in Jesuit community are so often expressions of care: listening, trusting, receiving and sharing.

I’ve long been attracted to Ignatius’ insight that most of life is a gift of love, ultimately from God, caring for us, inviting us to return love in our living and working with and for others. For me, that has been mostly high school ministry, which continues to get me up in the morning, each day an opportunity to care for Jesuit schools and for those current and future students, in turn, cared for in these schools.

What is new and innovative has always attracted me. I had no idea when, out of high school at St. Xavier I entered Milford Novitiate, that so much in the Church and especially in the Society would be reawakenedand newly directed. God’s care continues as invitation and challenge, a great time to be a Jesuit. How amazingly wonderful to be invited – by God, I believe – to Jesuit life!

Thanks to God for family and their gift of loving care for me, for brother Jesuits and their tolerant companionship and deep friendship, and for amazing colleagues, especially committed lay women and men whohelp lead and build the ministry of Jesuit schools.
